Top 10 Makeup Artists

Lighting and camera angle are not the only things that set the stage for an out of this world performance: the makeup of the actors help as well. Professional makeup artists do much more than just apply a little face powder or blush to any actor’s face — they can completely transform an actor with a series of masks, false noses, and other creative creations. Actors get plenty of press, so here is a list dedicated to the top ten makeup artists with the most impact, both in the past and also in the present.

1. George Westmore

Often referred to as the father of the movie makeup department. Westmore established the world of true Hollywood glamor in a way that still has influence over professional makeup artists today. His finest moment? Being honored alongside his family with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in October of 2008.

2. Max Factor

This legendary Hollywood makeup artist was one of the first to separate the unique makeup needs of film actors from their traditional theater counterparts, making the actors have a consistent appearance from scene to scene — something that was impossible to do before Factor’s contributions. He went on to form the Max Factor Cosmetics company, which is still in existence today.

3. Jack Pierce

Hailed as the king of monster movie makeup, Jack Pierce blazed a trail for other makeup artists to follow through his work in the class monster films Frankenstein, the Mummy and The Wolf Man in the early 1930s.

4. Kevyn Aucoin

An author as well as a powerful makeup artist, Kevyn Aucion is primarily known for his bestselling book ‘Making Faces’, as well as his memorable work for stars like Vanessa L. Williams, Tina Turner, Cher, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

5. Bobbi Brown

He earned an Academy Award for his makeup work 17 years before it was even an official category. Truly a dynamic makeup artist that’s definitely made an impact.

9. Alexis Vogel

When it comes to Alexis Vogel, it’s faster to list off who she hasn’t worked with in Hollywood instead of listing the numerous actors that she has taken care of over 22 years of work in the makeup industry. Her influence can be most recently seen through the makeup work on the set of American Idol, the hit reality music competition show on Fox.

10. Lauren Luke

Lauren Luke’s claim to fame is through a modern medium many of us have grown to love – YouTube. Going by the handle Panacea81, she has a long series of how to apply makeup. The success of that series has helped her launch a book and appear on numerous shows in the UK.

I agree with most of this list. But if you’re gonna include a makeup artist who rose to fame with YouTube, it’s pretty obvious that it should be Michelle Phan. She has a huge following worldwide (not just in the UK as with Lauren Luke) and about 1.3 million subscribers, so out of YouTube I would definitely say she has the most impact.
