Politicians are never honest. They are never liars as well, until they are caught that is. Even when caught they will do just about anything to cover up their wrongdoings. From lies to cheats, politicians think they can get away with just about anything.
So let’s revisit the most memorable, scandalous and embarrassing moments of all times. There’s nothing more embarrassing and scandalous then this.
1. Laxman Savadi & C.C. Patil:
The Indian Minister for Cooperation and the Minister for Women and Child Development quit their posts in February of 2012. A tape showed both watching porn while sitting in the state assembly. The owner of the phone was Minister for Ports, Science and Technology. He also quit. All 3 were part of an ultra-conservative party.
2. Eliot Spitzer:
In 2008, it was announced that this New York governor was resigning from office following revelations that he was having an affair with a prostitute. It turns out that he was a frequent client of Emperors Club VIP. Since the scandal, he has made a turnaround. He is now a family man who is also a regular columnist for Slate.
Amid speculation that Spitzer was attempting to reach a plea deal with federal investigators to avoid or reduce any criminal liability, a federal prosecutor said no such pact was ever reached.
Officials speculated that Spitzer had spent tens of thousands of dollars with the call-girl service. Another official said the amount could have been as high as $80,000.
3. Rod Blagojevich:
This Illinois governor was accused of trying to sell President-elect Barack Obama’s senate seat to highest bidder. This is the most humiliating behaviour exhibited yet. Of course he denied any wrongdoing. He believed that the truth was his honest ally.
Interestingly enough, Blagojevich sounded an optimistic and even defiant, as he has done repeatedly before and after he was convicted. Is he feeling remorseful for what he did? Time will eventually tell us.
4. Iris Robinson:
This Northern Ireland politician is known for her anti-gay stance. She is married to the first minister, Peter Robinson. She believes that gays could be cured and can become heterosexual, especially in her 2008 comment. She even went out to compare gays to pedophiles. Upon resignation, she revealed that she had an affair with a younger man. This affair caused her mental health issues. The male was underage.
More info? Just when you thought Northern Ireland had no more surprises left, this comes along. Strewth. I wonder if people outside the province grasp just how cataclysmic all this has been. Of all the political parties in these islands, the Democratic Unionists are, by a mile, the most fundamentalist, born-again, Christians with a capital C.
It’s a streak that has run through the party since its foundation by the Rev Ian Paisley, who also founded his own church, the Free Presbyterians. There was a time when the membership of the party was made up of about two thirds church members. It’s not quite the same now, but no observers of the NI scene would deny that it is, as they say, a “clean-living” party.
So for the wife of the party’s current leader, Peter Robinson, to be found out not just to have had a sexual relationship with a 19-year-old boy (I choose the word “boy” carefully, because that’s how it’s being seen) but also to have managed, as it would appear, without much difficulty, to get £50,000 in payments from two property developers to help the young fella start a business, is astonishing.
5. George Allen:
This Virginian senator got unwanted publicity at a rally where he pointed to a tracker sent by James Webb and his campaign. The tracker called the man a macaca-an African monkey (a racial slur). He also made mistake of repeating the word a number of times.
