Top 10 Terrifying Addictions

Addictions are behaviors that are chronic and persistent. We persist with such behaviors despite negative consequences. Many people become addicts to avoid discomfort and try to cope with ways of life. Here are 10 terrifying addictions that are not pretty when faced.

1. Pornography:

This is one addiction that is gross. People who excessively spend money on pornography need to seek assistance ASAP. This is especially the case if you are dating or married. This addiction is terrifying because it causes a blow to a relationship.

2. Gambling/Ludomania:

Gambling is one addiction that many people face around the world. This is not the occasional $2 lottery draw participation. Ludomania is actually an urge to continue to gamble despite consequences and despite the desire to stop. Many with gambling addictions take out loans, charge things on their credit cards. It is not too hard to lose $100 in casinos. Play within your limit. The addiction is terrifying as suicide rates are 20% higher.

3. Alcoholism:

This is the oldest, yet most popularly used drug in the world. There are 10 to 15 million alcoholics living in the United States. 100,000 deaths in the United States are caused by excessive alcohol drinking. The addiction is quite terrifying as it affects the nerve cells in the brain and poses as a danger to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. The liver may also be damaged as it does not have enough time to process the drugs going through the body.

4. Facebook:

Facebook is addictive. People enjoy playing games. They may sit for hours playing games and using Facebook. Many of those who use the social media outlet become short-tempered and also violent.

5. Cosmetic Surgeries:

There is a rise in people wanting to get cosmetic surgeries done on them. 12.1 million people had a procedure done in 2008 in USA. Having cosmetic surgeries is dangerous. People have died from getting liposuctions most notably in Toronto, Ontario in 2011.

6. Painkillers:

People reach for the pill bottle for pain relief. Many reach more times than they should or is actually safe to do. There are other alternatives, but many jump too early to the conclusion that they need painkillers. With pleasure and tolerance, comes withdrawal and that is unpleasant in itself. These symptoms the person tried to escape come back to haunt them.

7. Violence:

Many teenagers watch violence as it is portrayed in the media and by popular culture. Many of them enjoy watching wrestling and boxing. They try to mimic the moves on TV in real life. In 2009, a 12 year old boy was sentenced to life for killing a girl while imitating body slam moves.

8. Marijuana:

I believe there is such an addiction. This addiction is quite terrifying as people’s moods change and so does the coordination. People who are high have difficulty thinking, problem solving and have issues with learning and memory. It also increases the heart rate by 20-100% percent. The effect does not release until after 3 hours.

9. Sugar:

Many nutritionists feel this is a real addiction. Kathleen DesMaisons is the most famous researcher. She finds that increase in sugar in your body causes an effect on weight and state of mind. The substance is addictive because it affects brain chemistry. Many who are high on sugar may have symptoms of withdrawal and cravings.

10. Smoking:

I had to include this one. People die every day of first hand and second-hand smoking. Cigarettes have nicotine which makes people smoke on a regular basis. Once you start you cannot stop.

“This is one addiction that is gross. People who excessively spend money on pornography need to seek assistance ASAP”

Gross? Shame you chose to put this one at number 10 as your attitude immediately discredits the rest of your “journalism”. You sound like you’re writing for some sort of bizarrely prudish Christian organisation.

You’re right though – people who excessively spend money on it do need help… there’s plenty of it for free all over the internet.

Lionel Tate is the 12 year old who killed that little girl. His conviction was actually thrown out in 2003. I believe he only had to serve 3 years.
