If Warren is considered as the greatest investor of all time, there are solid reasons for this. Buffet intelligently built up Berkshire Hathaway’s cash reserves and turned down ‘attractive’ bailout offers from distressed firms during the economic crisis. Berkshire had $27.9 billion in cash at the end of 2008.

The only woman CEO on this list, Ms. Nooyi has charmed her male counterparts using her matchless leadership skills. Ms. Nooyi had initiated insistent cost-cutting measures which helped other arms of Pepsi to run smoothly. Her cool temperament despite recession and sliding sales makes her an excellent executive.

Mr. Gupta of Rohm and Haas has made to this list because the company was the best-performing U.S. stock of 2008. Mr. Gupta deserves to be applauded for his 10 year long loyalty. Some say that Mr. Gupta “inherited a conservative, family-controlled company, modernized it, put in a lot of technology and made it effective.”

Among other low-price fast food giants such as Wendy’s, Burger King and Yum Brands, McDonald’s has so far outperformed all. Skinner reinforced the work ethics that McDonald’s a world giant – improved food and service, expanded the menu and hours and this has finally paid off.

Hurd’s excellent marketing strategies have helped HP jump into the top most fortune 500 companies in the last five years. Returns and net profits have almost increased four times, lifted by demands for laptops (up 21%) in 2008.

In 2008, Wal-Mart had the seventh-best one-year stock return compared to all Fortune 500 companies – 19.99%. Even during tough economic times when consumers were spending very little, Wal-Mart managed to provide sizeable bargains. CEO Michael Duke helped achieve this feat by negotiating with union workers.

In spite of a 69 percent drop in net profit, Toyota still made profits in the second fiscal quarter of 2008.

To finish the list, we have included a former CEO of the airline company Boeing – Harry Stonecipher. He along with Alan Mullaly (now CEO of Ford), were responsible for turning around the profits of the troubled company which was facing competition from European rival Airbus.

Top 10 fastest cars for 2008 – 2009


All of these ten super cars  deserve to be number one in my books. However, this list is based strictly on top speed.

ssc-ultimate-aero-tt 1.    SSC Ultimate Aero; 257 mph, 0-60 in 2.7 seconds – This car was acknowledged by Guinness world records as the fastest car in March 2007. It is powered by a twin-turbo engine that packs an astounding 1183 horsepower. Only 24 cars were produced from 2006-2007 at a price of US $485,000.

bugatti_veyron2.    Bugatti Veyron; 253 mph, 0-60 in 2.5 seconds – This is a lightweight super car powered by a W16 engine with 1001 horsepower. It sells at $1,444,000, easily the highest priced car in the top 10 list.  The car produced by Volkswagen Group subsidiary Bugatti Automobiles was introduced in 2005 as the fastest production car in the world.

koenigsegg-ccx3.    Koenigsegg CCX; 250 mph+, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds – This Sweden-made fast car packs 806 power from its 90 degree V8 engine. The CCX was first unveiled on February 28, 2006 at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show although its existence was announced earlier.  At a price of $1,820,000 and $2,050,000 for top of the line model, exclusivity is guaranteed.

saleen-s7-twinturbo4.    Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo; 248 mph, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds – This super fast car is powered by an 100% aluminum V8 engine packing with 750 horsepower. This twin-turbocharged monster went on sale for $585,296 USD in 2005 , replacing standard non turbo S7 production. Saleen offers an optional competition package with 33% increase in power.

mclaren5.    McLaren F1; 240 mph, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds – It is power driven by powerhouse V12 engine that packs 62y horsepower. It is popular with its trademark doors that resemble bat wings. Up until 1998, when McLaren produced and sold the standard F1 models, they had a price tag of around 970 000 USD. Today the cars can sell for up to nearly twice that of the original price.

It is a mid-engined, rear wheel drive two-seater constructed on a tubular chromoly frame, with fiberglass or optional carbon fiber body panels. There are 3 engine types available with the race version rated at 789.06 bhp. The production of the Apollo started in October 2005 with a starting price of $400,000 USD.

Ascari-A107.    Ascari A10; 220 mph, 0-60 in 2.8 seconds – Although designed for racing A10 is intended to be a usable car or on the road. It is engineered and hand built in Banbury, England featuring a modified 5.0 L BMW V8 engine producing 625 bhp at a price of approximately $650,000 USD. Only 50 A10s lucky owners will have a chance to own one.

ferrari-enzo8.    Ferrari Enzo; 217 mph, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds – It is driven by a F140 V12 workhorse with 660 horsepower. It is currently one of the most powerful naturally aspirated  production cars in the world. There are only 399 of these cars worldwide and the price of a unit shoots up every time someone crashes one. This Ferrari typically trades above $1,000,000  at auction.

jaguar-xj22019.    Jaguar XJ 220; 217 mph, 0-60 in 4.0 seconds – This fast car is driven bya V6 engine that packs 542 horsepower. This is one of the oldest as being released in 1992 but still got what it takes to remain the round of ten of hot wheels. Total of 281 cars were made and by 1997, few of these remained available for sale new at £150,000.

pagani_zonda10.    Pagani Zonda F; 215 mph, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds –  It’s no mistake that Pagani chose to use the “F” badging to represent the first step up in performance for the Zonda above the stock Zonda S. This fast car is driven by Mercedes Benz V12 engine packing 650 horsepower. Base price for this dream car is $694,000.

Top 10 Universities in the World for 2008


According to Times magazine and its 2008 list of the world’s top-ranking universities the winner is still mighty Harvard University.

The name Harvard comes from the college’s first benefactor, the young minister John Harvard of Charlestown. Upon his death in 1638, he left half his estate to the institution established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Harvard college currently enrolls 6700 undegrads and 12300 graduate and professional students. Harvard University is made up of 10 principal academic units — nine faculties and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. The nine faculties oversee schools and divisions that offer courses and award academic degrees. Average tuition is around $32,557 a year.

Yale’s roots can be traced back to the 1640s, when colonial clergymen led an effort to establish a college in New Haven to preserve the tradition of European liberal education in the New World. This vision was fulfilled in 1701, when the charter was granted for a school “wherein Youth may be instructed in the Arts and Sciences [and] through the blessing of Almighty God may be fitted for Publick employment both in Church and Civil State.” In 1718 the school was renamed “Yale College” in gratitude to the Welsh merchant Elihu Yale, who had donated the proceeds from the sale of nine bales of goods together with 417 books and a portrait of King George I. Yale University comprises three major academic components: Yale College (the undergraduate program), the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the professional schools. Yale encompasses a wide array of centers and programs, libraries, museums, and administrative support offices. Approximately 11250 students attend Yale.

The University of Cambridge is one of the world’s oldest universities and leading academic centres, and a self-governed community of scholars. Its reputation for outstanding academic achievement is known world-wide for over 800 years. Cambridge University today boasts 31 colleges and over 13000 students.

As the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is a unique and historic institution. There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096. From its early days, Oxford was a centre for lively controversy, with scholars involved in religious and political disputes. Oxford has one of the lowest drop-out rates in the UK. There are over 20,000 students at Oxford, including 11917 undergraduates and 7350 postgraduates.

Caltech (commonly referred to as Caltech) began as a vocational school founded in Pasadena in 1891 by local businessman and politician Amos G. Throop. The school was known successively as Throop University, Throop Polytechnic Institute, and Throop College of Technology, before acquiring its current name in 1921. The California Institute of Technology  is a private research university located in Pasadena, California, United States. Caltech maintains a strong emphasis on the natural sciences and engineering. Caltech also operates and manages the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a NASA Center that oversees the design and operation of many unmanned space probes. Caltech is a small school, with only about 2100 students about 900 undergraduates and 1200 graduate students.

Imperial College London officially The Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine as given in its Royal Charteris a British university in London that focuses primarily on science, engineering, medicine and business. Imperial’s main campus is located in South Kensington in central London, on the boundary between the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the City of Westminster, with its front entrance on Exhibition Road. Formerly a constituent college of the University of London, Imperial became independent of the university on 8 July 2007, the 100th anniversary of its founding.

University College London (UCL) is a multi-faculty university institution based in the United Kingdom and a constituent college of the University of London. It was founded in 1826, as London University, and was the first British university institution established on a secular basis and also the first to admit students regardless of race, class, religion and gender.

Once the main roles were cast—in the persons of John D. Rockefeller and William Rainey Harper—the University of Chicago was irrevocably headed for greatness.  Established in 1891 without the support of both of these men it would never have become one of the nation’s major universities in a mere quarter century. It was the first ethnically diverse university in the US. Its doors are open to 4900 undergraduate students  and 9820 graduate professional every year.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private research university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. MIT has five schools and one college, containing a total of 32 academic departments, with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological research. Founded by William Barton Rogers in 1861 in response to the increasing industrialization of the United States, the university adopted the German university model and emphasized laboratory instruction from an early date. MIT enrolled 4,172 undergraduates, 6,048 postgraduate students in 2008 school year.

columbia10. Columbia University (US)

Columbia University in the City of New York, is a private university and a member of the Ivy League. Columbia’s main campus lies in the Morningside Heights neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan. The institution was established as King’s College by the Church of England, receiving a Royal Charter in 1754 from George II of Great Britain. There are over 20000 students at Columbia University , including 5530 undergraduates and 14692 postgraduates.

As in previous years 2007 listing, the rankings continue to be dominated by English-speaking universities and, in particular, those from the US and the UK which monopolise the top ten. This year, the Americans have strengthened their hold on the top ten, although Princeton has dropped out to be replaced by Columbia which comes in at number
