Top 10 Childhood Disorders

1 2

Special Education has evolved throughout 20th century. We no longer see children and adults with disabilities as being retarded. Many curriculum guidelines have taken out the term, retardation, and made it impossible for doctors to institutionalize children with disabilities. Here are just 10 childhood disabilities that are prevalent in our school systems.

1. Learning Disability:

The disorder affects the brain’s ability to receive and process information. A learning disability thus is not a problem with intelligence. Individuals with learning disabilities see, hear and understand things differently.

Example: Dyslexia

2. Gifted:

There is no definition for giftedness. Many see children who are gifted as talented and creative. They have a wide range of abilities that are both academic and leisurely. There is also a well-developed attention span, deep curiosity and the ability to grasp, retain and synthesize information.

3. Language Delay:

This is a failure to develop language abilities on the usual evolving timetable. A person with language delay experiences a postponement in the development of the underlying knowledge of language.

4. Pervasive Developmental Disorder:

This is a severe disorder that strikes to 10 to 15 out of 10,000 children. The disorder affects intellectual skills; responses to sights, sounds, smells and other senses as well as the ability to understand language or to talk. Children with PDD may undertake strange postures or perform unusual movements.

Example: Autism

5. Seasonal Affective Disorders:

Children may appear depressive during winter and summer and active during the fall and spring. These mood changes are usually due to seasonal changes and the inability to adjust to the variations.

Top 10 Ways to Bring Up Children

1 2

Flipping back to the pages of history, we would find that most successful people in life had one thing in common; they were all inquisitive as a child. Backgrounds do not matter neither does the culture or religion. It is the environments in which children grow provide a medium for a well rounded growth of a child. Growing up is not important it is the proper development and inculcation of right kind of habits and values in a child that results in a pleasing personality. The exploring capabilities are infinite in kids, remember how a crawling kid moves to the edge of a bed and falls off to his dismay. The ignorance of results and the motive to explore is the basic foundation of learning and development. There is no knowledge if there is fear and there is no learning if there is not any doubt. Thus it is very essential to be supportive and extremely patient especially while dealing with younger lots. This platform gives a great chance to jot down top ten best methods to bring up children in a manner that wins hearts and minds.

1. Ensuring proper health

A healthy child can grow up and adjust to all the changes properly. Ill health makes a child lag behind in studies and other co curricular activities in school. A child who does not keep well most of the times is also low in terms of social skills and feels shy to mix up with others. Thus a well balanced nutritional diet and proper hygiene go a long way in way in keeping a child healthy.

2. Providing Right Education

Schooling plays a vital role in the development of a child. It is the parents’ responsibility to provide proper schooling and education to their children. School takes care of the formative years of a child’s life, ranging from elementary education to playful activities and making friends for life all happen in the school days.

3. Inculcating culture

The child is the bearer of culture and tradition, he is the fore runner of the human race and life on earth; thus inculcation of proper traditions and culture is another vital aspect of bringing up children. However a thin line differentiates tradition from habits and fads from culture. Thus the responsibility lies on parents’ shoulders to provide right set of education as far as their family traditions and culture is concerned, so that the torch that he bears for his future generation emanates same kind of wisdom and brightness.

4. Teaching discipline

Teaching discipline is yet another task the parents are responsible for as it is in the company of parents that a child learns the difference between right and wrong. Discipline includes respect and right treatment of elders, peers and younger ones. Discipline reflects not only in behavior but also in day to day routine and other habits of keeping clean or eating.

5. Developing self confidence

Developing self confidence in kids is the key to a bright future. Supporting kids to be inquisitive and respecting their opinions, helping them to learn from their mistakes and letting them take minor decisions in life is the cornerstone of harvesting self confidence in children. This confidence makes a child smart enough to face the world on his own.

3. Refugees

There are over fifty million refugees all over the world and shockingly, 25 million are children. Top 10 Least Parent-Friendly Toys For Kids

1 2

There are certain toys that are so annoying that parents hate them. The bad part is that kids are crazy about the same toys. It is a lose-lose situation, if you look at it from a parent’s point of view- the kid will get upset if you don’t buy it and you will cry if you do buy it. Refrain from buying any of these toys, so that you can avoid yourself the headache later.

1. Beads

These usually come in large boxes with neat segregations and it’s all hunky dory till the kid opens the box. The beads spill out and go everywhere. The child then starts making mismatched and odd bracelets which the parent then has to wear because unfortunately, that’s what they expect.

2. Electronic Noisemakers

The most annoying electronic noisemakers are those that are in the form of chickens and dance about saying things like “I Can Dance” and “I Can Sing”. The battery cavity is screwed in and a parent may think the company does that to prevent the child from swallowing the batteries but in reality, they are saving the parent’s sanity as the child will not know how to open it up without help.

3. Slime

Slime is made with some awful material which slips off the child’s hand and amuses him for some reason. However, he will get bored of it soon and leave it lying about on the carpet and the parent will either slip on it and break his skull or spend hours trying to get it off.

4. Barbie Dolls

Every little girl in the world plays with Barbie dolls today. These are available in different avatars, for different occasions and so much more. Once the child receives the doll, she throws it about, twists its limbs, cuts the hair or removes all the clothes. Let’s not even get started on the box it comes in- you may as well be dismantling a bomb- it’s that complicated.

5. Lite Brite

A Lite Brite is some annoying toy that allows the child to draw pictures on it. The image then lights up and the colors used could not be brighter. If the parent happens to step on this toy in the middle of the night, he will definitely throw it out of the window and watch it break into pieces with a smile on his face.

Things went downhill for Lohan once she began filming “Herbie: Fully Loaded” and “Georgia Rule”. She was hospitalized twice during filming of “Herbie” due to stress, and even got a letter from the production team of “Georgia Rule”, stating to her of her unprofessionalism. In 2007, Lohan began her treatment at a rehab after being convicted of DUI twice. She also completed community service for ten days and spent one day in jail. She then spent 90 days in jail in 2010 for violating her probation period in the DUI case from 2007, and then was sentenced to serve 120 days in jail for stealing a necklace worth $250,000 in 2011. After a 5 years hiatus, we saw Lindsay Lohan come back to the top in 2012, when she hosted “Saturday Night Live”, as well as landed a gust starring role in the hit television show, “Glee”.

2. Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is the most successful artist of all time. But he proved that success comes at a very high price. Jackson began his career at age 5, when he began performing with his brothers. Their act was known as “Jackson 5”. His career began evolving even more when he began his solo career. His 1984 album, “Thriller”, is considered to be the most successful album of all time to this very day.

Behind closed doors, however, things were not as colorful. In a 1993 interview with Oprah, Jackson admitted that his father beat him as a child, though his father denied the claims. Jackson also talked about his childhood, and said it was far from normal. That same year, Jackson was accused of molesting a young boy. The case was resolved with a money deal. In 2003, after a documentary about Michael Jackson showed him holding the hand of a young boy, he again was accused of having sexual relations with a minor. This time, Jackson was arrested, but was found not guilty to all charges in 2005.

In 2001, Jackson released his last album, “Invincible”. Though not as successful as his previous ones, it still managed to sell 3 million copies worldwide. Jackson saw this as a failure. In 2009, Jackson planned a comeback tour, “This Is It”, which would mark his last hit in the industry. But before he could even begin performing, Jackson died on June 25, 2009, due to the large amount of medications provided by his doctor, Conrad Murray.

3. Britney Spears

Britney Spears began performing when she was part of The Mickey Mouse Club, along with Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, and Ryan Gosling. She then re-emerged when she released her hit single, “Hit Me Baby One More Time”. Spears became very popular with the young tweens and teens age groups. She released her debut album of the same name in 1998, as well as several others throughout the years.

Spears’ troubles began when she started dating backup dancer, Kevin Federline. She started dating him in 2004, married him the same year, had two children with him, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and divorced him in 2006. They also had a reality show, which lasted only 5 episodes. In 2007-2008, the world saw Britney Spears go through a meltdown. We saw her do things such as shave her head and hit the car of a paparazzi with an umbrella.

Things started to look up again once Spears’ father took control of her financials. Her music career went back on track as well Her album “Femme Fatale” is her most successful album as of yet. She is also now engaged to be married to her longtime boyfriend, Jason Trawick.

4. Dana Plato

Dana Plato was a particularly well known actress for her role in the hit series, “Diff’rent Strokes”. Plato played Kimberly, the teenage daughter of Phillip Drummond, a widower who adopts two African American boys after their parents died. The series aired from 1978 to 1986. Plato was cast at the beginning of its run, but her appearances ended in 1984, when she became pregnant. The producers of the show felt that a pregnancy would not fit the concept of the show. She appeared again between 1985 and 1986.

The end of “Diff’rent Strokes” marked the beginning of the end for Plato. She became overshadowed by her long running teenage role. After the birth of her son, Plato decided to get breast implants and appeared in Playboy, as well as movies such as “Bikini Beach Race” and “Lethal Cowboy”, B- movies. But all that did not help boost her career.

Plato was a heavy drug and alcohol user, and admitted that she was using drugs and alcohol while being a part of “Diff’rent Strokes”. After her divorce, she lost custody of her son. She then ended up in Las Vegas with no acting work, rather work in a dry cleaning store.

Dana Plato’s life came to an end on May 8, 1999, on Mother’s Day, due to a drug overdose. Her son shot himself in the head in 2010, at age 25, as he was not able to cope with his mother’s death.

5. Gary Coleman

Another “Diff’rent Strokes” alum bites the dust. Gary Coleman played Allan Jackson on the show, one of the African American boys who were adopted. His trademark quote on the show was, “What’choo talkin’ ’bout, Willis?” While being on the show, Coleman earned an estimated amount of $100,000. Coleman sued his parents and advisor for misusing the money. Despite winning the case in 1993, Coleman went bankrupt a decade later. He also faced legal troubles, such as being charged with assault after punching a fan at a mall.

Gary Coleman was short, 4 feet, 8 inches or 1.42 meters. But it was not because he was a midget, but a kidney condition and the treatments he had to go through. Coleman went through several kidney transplants, as well as frequent dialysis. He had stated in interviews that he tried, unsuccessfully, to commit suicide multiple times.

On May 26, 2010, Gary Coleman was hospitalized after falling down the stairs, after a possible seizure attack. He was in critical condition. On May 27, he was conscious, but his condition worsened. Coleman died on May 28, 2010.

It is difficult to describe the characters in this show. Let’s just say they are played by hands which hold up eyeballs. These hands don’t speak much- they throw about single worlds when they feel like it. If this does not give children nightmares, the Teletubbies surely will.

5. VeggieTales

This show features strange looking anthropomorphic vegetables that play instruments. What’s more, they teach children all about Biblical values and morals. Why?
