Top 10 Most Memorable Politicians

1 2

Men and women seem to be on fairly even footing — from a demographics standpoint, at least. According to 2012 worldwide estimates from the CIA, for every female baby born on the planet, 1.07 male babies are born, meaning that boys slightly outnumber girls. However, that his-to-hers ratio has evened out over the years, since men are known to die sooner than women.

But for all of that statistical equality, it’s a well-known fact that the places men and women live are often almost always living in a society dominated by the menfolk. The United States has yet to elect a female president, and as of 2012, women held 90 congressional seats, which might sound like a lot but is only 16.8 percent of the total numbers. Female senators are a similarly select group, making up only 17 of the 100 positions. The gender gap has still not been bridged and also extends beyond American borders, since there is less than 10 percent of female government leaders and fewer than one in five female parliament members worldwide.

As governments and organizations strive to close that sprawling disparity and get more women involved in political decision-making, it’s worthwhile to recognize those who’ve already done their parts to achieve that goal. Around the world, here are the top 10 pioneering politicians who have attempted to make our globalizing society a better place, for not just women, but blacks, the proletariat etc.

Here is a top 10 list of most memorable politicians who’ve left an impact on our global village.

>1. Jack Layton:

This NDP and the Official Position Party Leader of Canada was the first to be known by his first name. He talked to the people instead of at the people. He advocated for equality and for social justice across Canada and in Ontario.

Why No.1?  For the New Democratic Party, he was the leader who effectively moved them beyond just being a protest party. He gave reactionaries a taste of pragmatism that wasn’t too punitive for palates long familiar to ideological purity. In doing so, he opened the door for the more politically conventional style of the leader who filled his shoes, Thomas Mulcair. One need not be an NDP supporter to be impressed by Layton’s achievements and accomplishments. He therefore deserves to be on this list of most memorable politicians

2.  Barack Obama:

This is one president who is a risk taker who took on a big risk by promising to deal with the debt default by August of 2011. Not many politicians can take such a gamble on their life.

Stephen Rattner believes that the president understanding of the need for a long-term solution to the country’s deficit and other major budgetary matters, such as tax reform, will  most likely “define” his legacy as United States president. Although he was far from perfect and did not achieve much in his first term, President Obama made the effort that most presidents failed to do.

3. Sarah Palin:

This Vice-Presidential candidate was unconventional. Not many predecessors could say they were women running for presidency and a mom of 5 children, oldest being 20 and the youngest being 1 at the time of Presidential elections. She proudly endorsed herself as a hockey mom. AMERICA IS CHANGING!

Why one of the 10 most memorable politicians? In sum, Sarah Palin has have had a significant influence on presidential politics even if she never seeks office again as President or Vice-President. By a long shot bet, she may one day explore a Senate run in Arizona, where she recently purchased property. Meanwhile, I’ll think of her every time a politician makes the jump from campaigning to Fox News or reality television or any as yet untapped revenue stream.

4. Jesse Ventura:

This wrestler won the election for Governor of Minnesota in 1998. He did not follow he predecessors as soon as he entered office. He decided to take residence in his home, Maple Grove, instead of the Governor’s mansion. This created criticism as well as loss of jobs for some.

5. Ross Perot:

This Independent Presidential candidate is definitely unconventional. He announced his presidency on TV in the funniest way. He said that he would run, if voluntary people would put his name on the ballot in 50 states.

Why 1 of 10 most memorable politicians?  Perot (Reform Party) came too close for comfort in his presidential bid and the 2 major parties vowed to never allow a 3rd party be in those debates again after his run. The very REASON Perot got so many votes is because he was allowed into those debates.

Top 10 Reasons Politicians Justify Torture

1 2

When Obama was elected as President, he reduced the possibility of torture as a form of punishment and interrogation. In 2010, he even justified his interrogation methods as being fair, which this article will highlight.

In recent news, it was reported that President Obama is not able to fully eliminate torture from the records. If he will not be elected, leading Republican candidates may reintroduce the form of torture as a matter of good politics.

Here are just 10 reasons politicians/theorists used to justify their means of torture.

1. State Sanctioned Torture-Good Politics:

If Obama is not elected as President, many Republicans who may take his place believe that torture is a matter of good politics; especially when it comes to War on Terror.

2. Due Process:

President Bush believed that terrorists imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay had no right to due process. This limits habeas corpus rights for everyone, which everyone is entitled to in the US Constitution.

3. Waterboard is quintessential:

Throughout history waterboard has been used as a form of torture especially under Jim Crow Laws. President Bush recently used waterboard as torture (specifically inquisition). To him it was quintessential and harmless.

4. Enhanced Interrogation:

In 2010, the White House stipulated that their interrogation was tough, safe, necessary and lawful. They also stipulated that their methods were not torturous.

5. Security:

George W. Bush was not concerned about his popularity when tapping into people’s phone calls or interrogating possible terrorists in prison cells, which people called torture. He was instead concerned about the security of his country.

Top 10 Political Embarassments

1 2

Politicians are never honest. They are never liars as well, until they are caught that is. Even when caught they will do just about anything to cover up their wrongdoings. From lies to cheats, politicians think they can get away with just about anything.

So let’s revisit the most memorable, scandalous and embarrassing moments of all times. There’s nothing more embarrassing and scandalous then this.

1. Laxman Savadi & C.C. Patil:

The Indian Minister for Cooperation and the Minister for Women and Child Development quit their posts in February of 2012. A tape showed both watching porn while sitting in the state assembly. The owner of the phone was Minister for Ports, Science and Technology. He also quit. All 3 were part of an ultra-conservative party.

2. Eliot Spitzer:

In 2008, it was announced that this New York governor was resigning from office following revelations that he was having an affair with a prostitute. It turns out that he was a frequent client of Emperors Club VIP. Since the scandal, he has made a turnaround. He is now a family man who is also a regular columnist for Slate.

Amid speculation that Spitzer was attempting to reach a plea deal with federal investigators to avoid or reduce any criminal liability, a federal prosecutor said no such pact was ever reached.

Officials speculated that Spitzer had spent tens of thousands of dollars with the call-girl service. Another official said the amount could have been as high as $80,000.

3. Rod Blagojevich:

This Illinois governor was accused of trying to sell President-elect Barack Obama’s senate seat to highest bidder. This is the most humiliating behaviour exhibited yet. Of course he denied any wrongdoing. He believed that the truth was his honest ally.

Interestingly enough, Blagojevich sounded an optimistic and even defiant, as he has done repeatedly before and after he was convicted. Is he feeling remorseful for what he did? Time will eventually tell us.

4. Iris Robinson:

This Northern Ireland politician is known for her anti-gay stance. She is married to the first minister, Peter Robinson. She believes that gays could be cured and can become heterosexual, especially in her 2008 comment. She even went out to compare gays to pedophiles. Upon resignation, she revealed that she had an affair with a younger man. This affair caused her mental health issues. The male was underage.

More info? Just when you thought Northern Ireland had no more surprises left, this comes along. Strewth. I wonder if people outside the province grasp just how cataclysmic all this has been. Of all the political parties in these islands, the Democratic Unionists are, by a mile, the most fundamentalist, born-again, Christians with a capital C.

It’s a streak that has run through the party since its foundation by the Rev Ian Paisley, who also founded his own church, the Free Presbyterians. There was a time when the membership of the party was made up of about two thirds church members. It’s not quite the same now, but no observers of the NI scene would deny that it is, as they say, a “clean-living” party.

So for the wife of the party’s current leader, Peter Robinson, to be found out not just to have had a sexual relationship with a 19-year-old boy (I choose the word “boy” carefully, because that’s how it’s being seen) but also to have managed, as it would appear, without much difficulty, to get £50,000 in payments from two property developers to help the young fella start a business, is astonishing.

5. George Allen:

This Virginian senator got unwanted publicity at a rally where he pointed to a tracker sent by James Webb and his campaign. The tracker called the man a macaca-an African monkey (a racial slur). He also made mistake of repeating the word a number of times.
