Top 10 Pointless Rock Band Names

1 2

These are the top 10 bands with pointless names that Top 10 List feel are just plain stupid. Bands occasionally pick the most absurd names and who knows what goes into their mind when they are picking that name. Hopefully others will not follow suit and learn from their predecessors’ mistakes. Let’s take a look at top 10 pointless rock band names.

1. Kiss The Anus of a Black Cat:

Kiss the Anus of a Black CatA WHAT! It’s no wonder that this rock band is not as famous as many other top 10 rock bands on this list. How does rock music relate to a cat’s balloon knot? This is beyond bizarre if you ask me.

Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat is a psychedelic neofolk band from Gent, Belgium, formed by Stef Heeren. Their music was inspired by religious and shamanistic music and rituals. The name comes from a medieval witchcraft ritual.

2. Suffocate for Fuck Sake:

Suffocate for Fuck SakeShouldn’t it be for Fuck’s Sake? Again a rock band is underestimating its intelligence making itself look like a child in a garage playing this music. Why use the derogatory language? Not necessary if you ask me.

3. Smashing Pumpkins:

Smashing PumpkinsSmashing Pumpkins is an American alternative rock band, originating from Chicago Illinois. It was formed in 1988 by the frontman Billy Corgan, and James Iha, the rhythmic guitar player. Over the years the band has had a diverse, densely layered guitar heavy sound that combined elements of heavy metal, pop, psychedelic and gothic roc and even a touch of progressive rock as well.

Why pointless? Fans are not the only ones to believe the name is stupid. The band itself thinks the name was stupid and a bad idea. The name has nothing to do with squash as smash was meant to mean great (a British slang). Band members were quick to dissolve so that they can get on with their careers and lives. Where’s the pride? If you ask me…

Interestingly enough, the band is still active. Billy Cogan and Jimmy Chamberlin (left in 2009) reconvened to record the album Zeitgeist. The new members, which still include Cogan, have just released a new album Oceania and are on tour again.

4. Puddle of Mudd:

Puddle of MuddPuddle of Mudd is an American post-grunge band that has sold over seven million albums and had a number of No. 1 rock singles in the United States. Their song,”Blurry” was played three times in the video Ace Combat 5: The Unsung Way.

Critics cannot understand why the added the extra d in Mudd and “of” in their name. It does not really make sense, if you ask me. It’s like saying sandwich of tuna. The band would have been fine with just Mud Puddle as their name. Still original – if you ask me…

The name origins came from the 1993 Missouri River flood which left the band’s space a big muddy mess. They couldn’t name themselves the Missouri River Flood, so they thought of the current name.

5. Def Leppard:

Def LeppardDef Leppard was a British band that was formed in 1977, featuring members like Rick Savage, Joe Elliot and Phil Collins. The band’s success came between the early 1980s and 1990s. Their most popular album was High ‘n’ Dry which was produced by Robert Lange, the man who defined their style.

Singer Joe Elliot thought of the name while he was in high school. This makes it easier for me to understand why they misspelled their name to mean that can’t hear sounds. They might as well have called themselves Dreadful, Rotten Music and saved themselves the trouble of fan mocking them.

Despite their bad name, Def Leppard is a good band, selling 100 million albums worldwide. They are one of 5 rock bands with two original studio albums selling over 10 million copies in the United States.

Top 10 Worst Led Zeppelin Songs

1 2

Led Zeppelin is an influential rock band that has made history in both 1960s and the 1970s. They influenced a number of artists today with their vocals, music usages and techniques. Some songs did not hit well and were terrible. Here are the 10 songs, I feel, did not take home the bacon.

1. “Stairway to Heaven”
This is by far the worst song by Led Zeppelin. The group came out with this song in 1970 in the album Led Zeppelin III. It was a complete let down. The wording of the lyrics was obscure and open to vague interpretation. No specific meaning could be applied.

2. “Four Sticks”
Great album: Led Zeppelin IV. It was one of my most favourite to have been released by the rock group. This song absolutely reeked. The vocals were off.

3. “Your Time is Gonna Come”

This song was released in 1969 in the debut album. The song is about a lady who is unfaithful and who pays the price for her betrayal. The song was only once performed in concert in Tokyo in 1971. It is generally a good song with an overload and a distorted bass. The distorted bass can distract you from enjoying the music.

4. “The Lemon Song”

The song was featured in the 1969 album Led Zeppelin II. The song was recorded live in the studio with no electric devises. Some of the lyrics, “squeeze my lemon till the juice runs down my leg,” can be attributed to Robert Johnson and his hit “Travelling Riverside Blues.” The song was an adaptation to Howlin’ Wolf’s “Killing Floor”. The group was sued over copyright infringement. Additionally, many critics believe that the song was overdubbed when in concert.

5. “For Your Life”

This was way to Blues for a band that is a Rock Band. It tends to repeat itself and gets a bit boring. The theme is good though, given that Robert Plant discusses a drug-addicted friend. The tune was excellent as well.

1. The Beatles:

Every male in Europe desired to have their hairdo done like the Beatles. The Beatles were an amiable rock band group in the 1960s and 1970s. They were also one of the most critically acclaimed groups to ever exist, receiving 7 Grammys and 15 Ivor Novello Awards. Additionally, they have been awarded with 6 diamond and 24 multi-platinum albums amongst others. Popular culture has changed ever since the Beatles. Many artists such as Brian Adams were influenced by the group and its legacy.

2. Rolling Stones:

Who can forget the two best hits: Angie and Paint It Black? Furthermore can anyone guess the origins of Britney Spears’ song “Satisfaction”? The song was a modern rendition of Rolling Stones’ classic tune. The band itself was formed in 1962 by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ian Stewart and Brian Jones. In almost 50 years, Rolling Stones has released over 100 singles and over 2 dozen albums. They are still quite popular and are completing world tours. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards still have their groove, even in their 60s. Britney Spears would not use their songs, otherwise.

3. U2:

U2 is an Irish rock band formed in 1976 by Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. By the mid 1980s, U2 was a top international act. They won 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band and are ranked 22 by the Rolling Stones in their list of 100 Greatest Artists of all Time. Outside of their musical careers, U2 completes charity and humanitarian work to combat poverty and AIDS.

4. Pink Floyd:

Formed in 1967, they sold more than 200 million albums worldwide. They have also won 4 Grammy awards and helped define the progressive rock era. They are most significant for their introduction of fireworks and lights to their stage acts. Their song, “We Don’t Need No Education“ is still popular today, especially among rebellious kids.

5. Santana:

Santana still has the touch 42 years later with their recent hits such as “Maria”. They are a Latin rock band which has won 8 Grammy Awards and 3 Latin Grammy Awards. They are currently on tour with Michael Franti and Spearhead. Carlos Santana, the leader, was named No. 15 on Rolling Stones` list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time.

Top 10 Rock Songs

1 2

Selecting the top ten rock songs can be as tough as picking the best stones out of a heap of diamonds. All aspects of the song have to be taken into consideration, the lyrics, the music, the audio sound, the video presentation and the actual sales of the song. The category rock is also hard to define. Rock and Metal almost border on each other. The rhythms in rock have changed over the years. It is a mixture of rock and roll, rhythm and blues, country and traces of jazz. Two factors definitely distinguish this genre of music, the singers are white and the electric guitar is used to an overbearing extent, so much so that it can be bone jarring. There may be many other songs, personal favorites of selectors but these ten cannot be ever ignored. The modern version of Rock can be and has been classified under Alternative Rock. Taking all this into consideration these are the all time favorites in Rock:-

1. Pink Floyd – Money

This is a very popular song from the high selling Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon. The  released in 1973. The distinctive sound of the song depends on the clever splicing of several different sounds into one track. The different sounds are of coins clinking, cash registers ringing, currency notes being torn and the clear hard sounds of the guitar. This was one of the songs which made the album such a super hit.

2. Guns n Roses – November Rain

This song written by Axl Rose who is also the lead singer of the band Guns n Roses was released in 1992. It is a very long song with lengthy orchestral arrangements. The ending guitar solo by Slash is considered one of the best amongst guitar solos in a song. The popular video of the song shows Axl getting married to his girl friend before a storm ruins the wedding.

3. The Eagles – Hotel California

The authenticity of this ranking cannot be disputed by anyone in the world on a top ten chart. There might be demands of placing it at number one. The song was released in1977 and was written by Don Henley, Don Felder and Glenn Frey. The song sold a million copies within three months of its release. The Eagles also won the album of the year Grammy in 1978. The song’s solo is ranked number eight.

4. Credence Clearwater Revival – Have you ever Seen the Rain

Have you seen the rain was released in 1971 and was written by John Fogerty for the band Credence Clearwater Revival.  It records the end of personal idealism of the band a nostalgia for the good times that do not last too long. The song keeps getting revived and replayed in movies and televisions shows. It is from the album Pendulum.

5. Coldplay – Viva la Vida

This is an example of alternative rock and the British invasion of the American Rock scene. Viva la Vida is the collective writing effort of the entire band of Cold Play. The song was released in 2008 and won the Grammy for the Song of the year in 2009. It was a hit in both the UK and the USA. It is one of the few songs which have had 4 million paid downloads. Viva la Vida means ‘long live life’ in Spanish.

Top 10 Rock Songs That Will Depress You Completely

1 2

There are some rock songs that will inspire you and make you feel hopeful about life in general. Then there are those that will make you feel hopeful about death. The following is a list of the top 10 rock songs that will surely depress you if you feel the blues are creeping up to you.

1. Lover, You Should Have Come Over by Jeff Buckley

The song is brilliant and Jeff Buckley’s voice is beautiful, to say the least. However, the lyrics are so depressing that you will want to kill yourself before the song ends. It’s a pretty song which mixes breakup with a breakdown and talks a lot about loneliness.

2. Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd is known to have created some of the best songs ever and this one is not an exception. If you come out alive after listening to Lover, You Should Have Come Over, make sure you listen to the lyrics of this song which talk about having an unresponsive and indifferent attitude towards the world.

3. Decades by Joy Division

The fact that Ian Curtis had unmistakable suicidal tendencies becomes apparent in this song. The lyrics talk about how ‘we’ knocked on hell’s doors and forced ‘ourselves’ in. It is quite a breaking taking ode to suicide.

4. Yes by Manic Street Preachers

This song is laced with every depressing theme you can think of- mutilation, annihilation, alienation and deprecation. Richey James Edward was clearly emotionally unstable and the fact that he disappeared without a trace in 1995 makes it easy to understand why he wrote such mind-numbingly depressing lyrics.

5. Stella Was A Diver And She Was Always Down by Interpol

When this song was released, it became clear that the band was a part of the ‘goth pop’ genre. The lyrics centre around a woman who is stuck in a dark society and how she drowns herself to make it end. The atmosphere surrounding the song is dark and depressing enough to make you want to cry yourself to sleep.

Top 10 Performances By The Beatles

1 2

The Beatles are nothing if not legendary and while all their performances have been memorable, the following 10 were particularly outstanding.

1. Abbey Road

This was the band’s last album but the fact that the EMI London Recording Studio changed its name to Abbey Road Studios, should give you an idea about how amazing the recording sessions were. After the release of the album, this studio became the most sought after studio and those who worked there were treated like celebrities.

2. Strawberry Fields Forever

This was the first song recorded by the band when they decided to stop touring and were told to pull up their socks. Needless to say, they followed it up and the final recording session was remarkable. However, Lennon did not like it as much as the rest of the band members. It influenced the likes of Jeff Lynne and ELO.

3. I Wanna Be Your Man

When this song was first recorded, none of the band members were happy with it. McCartney and Lennon felt that that they needed to change the sound in such a way that it would be at par with their debut hit single. The two members then vanished for about 15 minutes and came back with a much better version of the song. Mick Jagger says that he was greatly influenced by this song.

4. Rubber Soul

Brian Wilson was significantly influenced by this song even though the band felt that the original sound was not at par with the quality they were known to produce. If The Beatles did not perform this song at a concert, the audience would beg them to until they did- at least 4 times!

5. I Wanna Hold Your Hand

This single was not accepted by most recording studios in the United States. However, Columbia Records finally released it and it became the band’s first hit single. The song raised the bar for the band and all their subsequent songs were made to match up to its superior sound. Needless to say, all the contemporary bands were forced to see what they were up against and had no choice but to work even harder!

Top 10 Most Underrated Rock Bands

1 2

By way of an introduction, it is best pointed out at the outset that underrated does not imply unheard of and unknown bands – it primarily means those bands that never made it as big as they were supposed to. Thus, some of the bands on this list may be popular on your playlist, but they figure here because they failed to click with the masses.

1. Third Eye Blind

This band made it to the Billboard countdown for four consecutive years from 1997 to 2000 – but you never hear them on the radio, rarely get to see their videos on TV, and almost none of the people you meet have heard them. Yet, when you pick up their debut album, you are blown away by their music.

2. Hanoi Rocks

This Finnish band was formed in 1977 and they continued to play for around eight odd years, before disbanding after a series of misfortunes in 1985. They never made it to the big labels but their music has its own cult following, swearing by their offbeat melodies and sound tones.

3. Nazareth

Тhis band is synonymous with the hit ‘Love Hurts’ but no one knows any other song by them. This typical rock band of the seventies has several great numbers which have even been covered by other artists like the Guns N’ Roses. Yet, you don’t hear of any die-hard Nazareth fan who has their complete discography.

4. The Dandy Warhols

Debuting in 1995, this American band cannot be called a rock band, for their music defies genre. They have released only a handful of albums in the past fifteen years and have remained media shy. Although their tracks are all too familiar (what with them being used in TV shows and movies all the time) very few have heard of them and really heard them.

5. Talking Heads

This band has explored almost every type of music there was to explore in the eighties. They have had Billboard numbers almost every year starting from 1979, and have had several hit albums. Yet, they never gained celebrity status, and seemed to disappear into oblivion.

Top 10 Rock Stars Who Died Young

1 2

Many well-known rock stars have died at a young age. Research undertaken in the UK indicated that there were 100 deaths of famous rock stars between 1956 and 2005. Lives of over 1000 rock stars were examined in the study. 25% of these 100 people died owing to drug abuse and alcohol. Some famous rock stars that died young include:

1. Elvis Presley

Elvis PresleyElvis Presley was a white southerner who is also credited as being the first real rock and roll star. The hip swiveling sexuality that accompanied his music made him an instant teen idol and a role model for the younger generation. He was considered a bad influence and was also dismissed as being incompetent and vulgar. He died on 16, August, 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 42.

His is the only rock star ever to enjoy prolonged success on the big screen. Elvis Presley was a phenomenon the likes of whom will never be seen again unless you are a conspiracy theorist. His impact remains incalculable, and it could easily be argued that no figure of the postwar era could have had such greater, far-reaching influence on popular culture. It is fashionable to criticize his 31 feature films,. However, his greater influence on rock & roll in film — not only as a subject matter but also as an essential component of soundtracks and scores — seems unbelievable had Presley not first made the music both commercially viable and culturally palatable. His movies were made and marketed solely for his fans, and they responded in droves.

2. Sid Vicious
PD*2269052An English musician, Sid Vicious was best known for the bassist of the punk group “Sex Pistols”. He died at the age of 21 owing to heroin overdose on February 2, 1979.

The Sex Pistols was created in 1975. One of the leading forces in punk music, the band played fast-paced short songs, expressing angst and frustration some of social and political issues at that time. Unlike music acts from previous generations, the group had no interest in producing hit records or pleasing anyone, except themselves Even before Vicious joined, the Sex Pistols were known for causing quite a stir. During a live television interview in 1976, they spewed so many profanities that had them dropped by their own record company.

Vicious was on board, however, for some of the group’s biggest sensations. On the single “God Save the Queen,” singer John Rotten (the stage name of John Lyndon) insulted Queen Elizabeth II, saying that she “ain’t no human being” and had a “fascist regime.” This upset Britons, especially since 1977 was  the Queen’s Jubilee to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 25 years as the reigning monarch. As a result, the band was physically attacked several times and unable to find places to play in the United Kingdom.

Still The Sex Pistols managed to sell a lot of records, especially considering the single was banned and many retailers refused to sell the resulting album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols. There was no denying that they struck a chord with punk music fans.

3. Jerry Garcia

Jerry GarciaJerome John “Jerry” Garcia was an American musician. He became popular for his work with the brand the Grateful dead. Garcia was considered to be the “spokesman” of the group. He died on August 9, 1995 at the age of 53 of a heart attack after recuperation from a drug addiction.

I would say that Jerry’s impact on mankind is quite broad and his influence on my music is much more significant than he is ever given credit for. Not only the music of which his guitar phrasing is hard for us to avoid in our own heads. Or in his vocal style that has absorbed into our minds forever until we die. The vulnerability in his voice made people connect with him and understood him, and that they were on the same trip, although they never met.

4. Johnny Ramone
Johnny RamoneJohn William Cummings popularly known as Johnny Ramone was a leading guitarist for the rock punk group “The Ramones”. He was a founding member of the band and was a part of it all through his career. He died in Los Angeles on September 15, 2004 at the age of 55 after battling with prostate cancer.

5. Carl Wilson

Carl WilsonAn American rock and roll star, Carl Dean Wilson was well known as a lead guitarist of “The Beach Boys”. In 1988, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On February 6, 1998 he died at the age of 51.
