Gadgets are so much a part of our lives that we do not even realise how dependent we are on them. Until one of them breaks down! Then all hell breaks loose and suddenly we realise that these gadgets are indispensable. Here are 10 smaller gadgets which are an intrinsic part of modern day life.
1. Cell Phones
A life without a mobile phone? Ask the younger generation and they will look at you with horrified surprise. How did our parents ever manage without them? Look around you, everyone has one, and many of them have more than two. Instant communication between people, no matter where they are, has taken on a new meaning with telephones and mobile phones.
2. Laptops and Computers
Computers have taken over every aspect of our organised lives now. Laptops are the new tools we walk around with and data storage has taken on a new meaning. As with mobile phones, every family member has his/her own computer and they spend more time with it than with the family members and friends.
3. MP3 Players
It began with Sony’s Walkman, music was suddenly portable. Then came the portable CD players and now the MP3 players. The IPod revolutionised this field, and now all of us walk around with tiny headphones and a large amount of music stored in our players. Everyone can store its own personal music and listen to it in solitude.
4. Digital Cameras
Instant communication and now instant cameras. The digital cameras spelt the demise of the camera film roll, and suddenly you could take any number of pictures, see them on the camera screen instantly, delete the unwanted ones, and store the rest on your computer. Bulky photograph albums have become passé and you can print your favourite images on your own printer.
5. Mixers
Juicers, mixers, blenders, you can call them by any name, but they are a boon for anyone who enters a kitchen. They churn, blend, chop, mix and are multi-faceted gadgets!! With each new model, there is a new utility feature added to it, and they are present in every kitchen.
6. Microwave Ovens
Try heating up your food on the gas range – you will be yearning for the convenience of a microwave oven. Mainly used to heat up food, it can also be safely used for cooking. The convenience of being able to use it with all variety of crockery (except for metal dishes) has made it the most popular gadget in a kitchen.
7. ATM Cards
This tiny little gadget that sits in your wallet, has made a visit to the bank superfluous. Money is easily available, bank statements are also accessible, and you can access your money anywhere in the world.
8. Toasters
Hot, freshly buttered toast, there are few things as delicious as this. A great breakfast gadget, the harassed housewife, the hurried executive, the hungry child, they all turn to a toaster for nourishment.
9. Coffee Machines
They come in all shapes and sizes and qualities, but the basic purpose is just one – a good hot cup of freshly brewed coffee. The economies of many coffee producing nations owe a lot to this omnipresent gadget.
10. Cheese Grater
A very tiny kitchen gadget, but ask anyone who cooks it is a great gadget to have. It grates everything from cheese to onions to potatoes, and it also occasionally slices some of these ingredients.
