Magnesium sulfate also known as epson salt is often used for the treatment of constipation and heartburn. Consuming this salt assists in the increasing the level of magnesium present in the body. Excess amount of magnesium in the body can show as magnesium sulfate toxicity symptoms.

When you’re pregnant, magnesium helps build and repair your body’s tissues. A severe deficiency during pregnancy may lead to preeclampsia, poor fetal growth, and even infant mortality.

Like many vitamins and minerals, excessive amounts of magnesium can be toxic. As noted by the National Institutes of Health, foods generally do not have enough magnesium to be toxic, but taking magnesium supplements can lead to overdose. Symptoms include mental status changes such as disorientation, confusion and changes in the level of consciousness. It may also have an effect on the fetuses’ brain and heart, causing dangerous complications.



In the first two weeks post conception and the second two weeks in the last menstrual period, the embryo is resilient to the poorly forming effects of x rays.  Doses higher than 5 rad or 50 mSv can cause a miscarriage.



Pregnancy places additional stress on kidneys. Active kidneys can cause problems during pregnancy and may even lead to a loss. This means if you have lupus, do not become pregnant. Treat the disorder first, getting it under control.
