Top Ten Amazing Temples

The following temples are considered to be the most amazing in the world. The list covers different religions.

 

1. Wat Rong Khun

This temple is located in Thailand and is completely white in color. It is adorned with mosaic mirrors which makes the temple shine. This beautiful temple is still getting constructed and it is said that in another 90 years, it will feature in the List of the Wonders of the World.

 

2. Shwedagon Pagoda

This temple is located in Mynamar and is also known as the Golden Temple. The structure is all gold and Buddhists use their savings to purchase gold leafs which they then attach to the walls of the temple. The dome holds 2,000 rubies and 5,000 diamonds.

 

3. Tiger’s Nest Monastery

This temple is located in Bhutan, at the edge of a cliff. It is said that Guru Rinpoche landed on the cliff while he was riding a tigress after which he went on to meditate for years in a cave. This cave can be found in the monastery.

 

4. Prambanan

This Hindu Temple is situated in Indonesia. It holds 8 large shrines and over 200 other small ones. The walls are covered with writings about Vishnu and Hanuman. These stories also talk about the Ramayana as well as other legends.

 

5. Temple of Heaven

This Taoist temple is located in Beijing. Every part of this temple is circular in shape which is said to represent Heaven. However, the ground is square and represents Earth.

 

6. Borobudur

This temple was found in Indonesia by the Dutch occupiers. It is made entirely of stones and has over 2,000 relief panels along with 504 statues of the Buddha. Nobody knows when the temple was built and the reason behind it. A number of scholars say that the temple is a Buddhism textbook and that a pilgrim should go through the several platforms and walk for 2 miles in order to read it.

 

7. Chion-in Temple

This temple is said to be the most famous Japanese temple. Those who visit this temple are first required to go through the massive San-mon Gate. The bell of the temple weighs over 70 tons and during the New Year celebrations, 17 monks are supposed to ring it. The Assembly Hall of the temple has a ‘nightingale’ floor which is formally referred to as a uguisu-bari. If intruders are to enter, the wooden planks creak and the monks are alerted.

 

8. Golden Temple

The Golden Temple is also known as the Harmandir Sahib and is the holiest site for the followers of Sikhism. It stands for spiritual independence and freedom that is infinite. The construction of the temple started during the 1500s and a small lake was extended which came to be known as the Pool of the Nectar of Immortality. The temple is gilded in gold and adorns a number of precious stones.

 

9. Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is found in Cambodia and was initially a Hindu temple. Over time, it became holy place for Buddhists. The temple was brought into notice when a Portuguese monk said that one cannot describe it and that the decoration is truly breath-taking. The temple is very popular among tourists.

 

10. Vishnu Temple of Srirangam

This temple is the largest temple for Hindus in the world. It has 7 concentric walls and covers 150 acres. The outermost wall is 4 kilometers in length. The inner-most wall cannot be visited by non-Hindus.
