Every year DJ Mag releases their Top 100 DJ list. In this post we will cover the 2011 Top 10 DJs from around the world.
1. David Guetta
Born in 1967 from Paris, France. Mr. Guetta has been honing his craft since the 1980’s in French nightclubs. He discovered house music in 1987, but didn’t skyrocket to international fame until the late 2000’s. Known for his collaborations with high-profile American pop vocalists.
2. Armin van Buuren
Dutch Trance producer and DJ born in 1976. Ranked number one DJ in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Hosts the “State of Trance” radio show that claims over 15 million weekly listeners. One of the most popular radio shows in the world.
3. Tiësto
Tijs Michiel Verwest aka Tiësto, also from the Netherlands, was born in 1969. Ranked number one in 2002, 2003, and 2004, he is still on top of the DJ game. Started DJing at school parties, and quickly moved onto clubs. Busted onto the international scene in 2001 with his first solo album “In My Memory”.
4. Deadmau5
Born in 1981, Joel Thomas Zimmerman, is one of the youngest Top 10 DJs. From Canada, Deadmau5 (pronounced Dead Mouse) has dominated the progressive and electro house scenes since 2005.
5. Above & Beyond
An English Trance trio consisting of members Paavo Siljamäki, Tony McGuinness, and Jono Grant. The group was formed in 2000 to work on a remix of Chakra’s classic track “Home”. They have run their own label, Anjunabeats, ever since.
6. Avicii
Tim Bergling, born 1989, is a Swede known professionally as Avicii. Gaining fame in 2010 with his track “Ridvan”, he elevated his status with the 2011 track “Levels”. In 2012 he performed as the main headliner at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, FL. Madonna accompanied him on stage at Ultra.
7. Afrojack
Born in 1987, Nic van de Wall is a Dutch born House and Techno producer/DJ. Debuting on the Top 100 list at number 19 in 2012, Afrojack has jumped to number 7 in 2011. Two tracks that have helped him gain notoriety are “Give Me Everything” and “Run the World (Girls)”.
8. Dash Berlin
A Progressive-Trance project from the Netherlands. Jeffrey Sutorius is the DJ/frontman while Eelke Kalberg and Sebastiaan Molijn are the beat producers. The track “Till The Sky Falls Down” rose to number one on the Trance charts and helped this group gain international acclaim.
9. Markus Schulz
Known for his “Global DJ Broadcast” radio show, this German born Trance DJ lives in Miami, FL. Born in 1975, Markus is the man behind the electronic music record label “Coldharbour”.
10. Swedish House Mafia
As you can probably guess from their name, this trio is from Sweden. Formed in late 2008, members Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso have been called a “super-group”.
