A basic mobile phone features a SIM card and messaging services. The latest mobile phones feature a variety of services and latest technologies that enable its users interact with the world-wide community. These latest technologies enable users to access the internet and transfer large data files at great speeds in addition to place location using the GPS (Global Positioning Systems) gadgets.
1. Wi-Fi Technology
This is a wireless technology that improves the capability of mobile wireless gadgets like cell phones. Mobile phone users can use their Wi-Fi enabled phones to play games, connect to networks and the internet and access VoIP. Mobile phones can also connect directly to other gadgets that support Wi-Fi technology . In comparison to Bluetooth, it is faster and covers a wider range and allows for user access to services like emails anytime.
2. Mobile VoIP technology
This technology has become very popular among mobile phone users because as compared to the traditional mobile telephone networks, it allows for access to call services at lower rates. These calls are made over the internet that usually charge flat fees for data and voice calls and for long distance calls, charges are not made based on per-minute fee thus saving the user a lot of money. VoIP services can be accessed over 3G smart phones through Skype and TruPhone.
3. HSDPA (high-Speed Downlink Packet Access)
HSDPA is a third generation (3G) mobile communications protocol found in the HSPA family that enables networks to have higher capacities and data transfer rates based on the UMTS system. The current down-link speeds that are supported by this technology are 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.4 mega bits per second. We can expect greater speeds in the future.
4. Fourth Generation (4G) Technology
This communication system provides an IP solution that is very comprehensive that supports streaming of multimedia, data and voice at higher rates at anytime and anywhere by mobile phone users. 4G is expected to provide higher data rates and QoS in the future when it becomes a fully integrated IP-based system after convergence of wireless and cabled network technologies.
5. Secure SMS messaging Technology
This technology has been implemented to allow for mobile money transfer services for making payments and banking services using a mobile phone. This includes M-PESA by a Kenyan mobile phone operator called Safaricom. The concept is now gaining popularity among numerous nations including the UK and US.
