Some streets in the world are downright terrifying while the rest are beautiful simply because they are unique and sometimes, maze-like.
1. Gravity hills
Gravity hills are found all over the world. Those who have been on such streets will know that if you park your vehicle at its foot, an illusion will be created that will make you believe that the car or bike is actually going up the hill!
2. Ebenezer Place
This street is in Scotland and is considered to be the shortest in the world as it is only 6.8 feet long. Naturally, there is only one house on this tiny street which was constructed in 1883.
3. Pan-American Highway
If Ebenezer Place is the shortest street in the world, this one is the longest. Earlier a street in Japan held the title but over the years because of several changes, this one has replaced it. It stretches across 29,800 miles and goes through nations like El Salvador, USA, Mexico and 12 others.
4. Parliament Street
Parliament Street in England is said to be the narrowest of its kind in the world. It measures about 25 inches and is 50 meters in terms of length and has been around since the 1300s.
5. Road to Giza
Road to Giza is mesmerizing because it is about 46,000 years old which makes it the oldest paved street in the world. It stretches across 7.5 miles and was initially used for the movement of basalt from one location to another.
Well-paved with good intentions, the Road to Perdition stretches exactly as wide as peak traffic demands. Like the Autobahn in Germany, the Road to Perdition has no speed limits, and legend holds that James Dean and Steve McQueen still drag race along one especially smooth and straight stretch.
Bigger than many American small towns, the El Toro Y covers nearly two square miles with solid concrete. At its widest point, the “Y” stretches 26 lanes wide, not counting frontage and access roads. In addition to ranking high among the world’s widest roads, the El Toro Y also comes close to the top of the list for world’s busiest roads—every day, nearly 400,000 cars grind through the interchange.
Arguably the world’s most spectacular expanse of public thoroughfare, nicely manicured and very well groomed, the Monumental Axis, according to legend, accommodates 160 cars side-by-side. At least a dozen reputable sources repeat this claim, but none has pictures or expert eyewitnesses. Canadians disqualify the Monumental Axis’s claims to #1, alleging that all previous measures unfairly have included the admittedly capacious median strip; proud Brazilians shrug-off these allegations.
Loyal Canadians crowd geography sites, fervently arguing that their big road ought to top the list of the world’s widest roads. Very technically, they make their case, but reputation and legend dictate the outcome of this competition. For the record, Highway 401 sports twenty-two Canadian-sized lanes, and several authoritative sources give 401 the distinction of “widest highway in North America”—the equivalent of a silver medal.
More testimony to Americans’ love of their cars and highways, I75 features 15 contiguous multi-purpose lanes, and builders are adding a four-lane trucks-only tollway, plus an additional four-lane by-pass exclusively for high-occupancy vehicles. When “they” finish construction, the highway will stretch 23 lanes wide, matching other entries on the list, but beating them in strict measure by 6 to 10 feet.
This highway extends a long 4,860 miles across Canada. The road starts in Vancouver Island, British Columbia and crosses the Continental Divide, 10 provinces, 5 time zones and ends in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The highway is not a single route and varies in size. An adventurous traveler can take various routes in some places while crossing the highway.
This refers to group of several federal highways that extend throughout Russia ranging from the Baltic Sea of the Atlantic Ocean to the Japan Sea of the Pacific Ocean. The route is called the AH6 in Asia. Its length is more than 11,000 kilometers and it extends from Saint Petersburg to Vladivostok.
The original Route 6 designated in 1925 extended from Provincetown, Massachusetts, to Brewster, New York. Later it was referred to as the “Roosevelt Highway,” a name that was given to the entire transcontinental Route 6. This highway spanned further to Greeley, Colorado in 1931. It was extended south to Long Beach and westward to Bishop, California.
The 401 or MacDonald Cartier Freeway starts at the Detroit-Windsor Ambassador Bridge and culminates at the Quebec border near Montreal. The highway lies in the middle of the town though it was built out in the country side originally.
The longest Interstate Highway in the U.S, this highway extends up to 3,099.07 miles (4,987 km). It runs parallel to the U.S Route 20 for the most part. Its eastern terminus is in Boston and western terminus is in Seattle. It crosses the Continental divide just east of Butte, Montana.
