Top 10 Places on Earth to Survive A Nuclear Winter

1 2

Nuclear winter better known as the atomic winter is a theoretical climatic effect of nuclear war. It is hypothesized that exploding large numbers of nuclear weapons has a weighty and severe effect on the climate and results in cold winter weather and reduced sunlight for a period of months or even years, especially inflammable targets such as cities, where large amounts of smoke and dirt would be expelled into the Earth’s stratosphere.

Background Info: During the Cold War a nuclear exchange between the two superpowers—the United States and the former Soviet Union—was projected to result in a “nuclear winter.”

In the worst case scenario, hundreds of nuclear explosions spark huge fires, whose smoke, dust, and ash blot out the sun for weeks amongst a milieu of perilous radiation levels. Much of humanity ultimately would dies of starvation and disease.

Today, with the United States the only standing superpower, nuclear winter is little more than a nightmare that it saw during the Cold War. A nuclear war remains a very real threat—for between developing-world nuclear powers, including Indian and Pakistan and between newly developing countries like Iran and the United States,

To test the effects of nuclear fallout, scientists from NASA and other institutions modeled a war involving a hundred Hiroshima-level bombs, each packing the equivalent of 15,000 tons of TNT. Researchers forecast horrifying resulting, including fires which would kick up roughly five million metric tons of black carbon into the upper part of the troposphere – the lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

This top 10 list examines 10 places to escape to in case there is a nuclear winter.

1. Pitcairn Islands, Madagascar:

Pitcairn Islands, MadagascarMadagascar Islands are a great escape for pathogenic disasters. There are no airports or seaports and is removed enough to survive just about any apocalypse. There is an added bonus: fertile lands, bananas, papayas, breadfruit and sweet potato are plentiful and edible fish are abound. The population right now is just at 50 people.

If you are a history major, you would remember reading about Hitler analyzing and weighing the Madagascar Plan, which sought to send Jews to Madagascar.

2. Moscow, Russia:

Moscow, RussiaThe Underground Command Post. Built in 1951, this very secret bunker served as the main artery for communication for the Soviet Union in the event of a nuclear war with the United States. It was built to survive direct hits and ensure that normal telecommunications in the worst case scenario is still active.

It’s so well cloaked that anyone can pass by this building many times and would never guess that such a place exists. Upon entry you are issued an id with a picture of yourself in a gas mask. This is just the beginning. You pass by an incredible 6 ton concrete door which slide open to reveal a small set of stairs, which go down. And down. And down further there is the Command Post.

3. Bugarach, France:

Bugarach, FranceIf the legend is true and the southern French town of Bugarach is the only place to hide then by all means go there to save yourselves. Conspiracy theorists believe that the upside down mountain offers protection against end of the world. You never know what will happen, especially after the failed doomsday theories.

4. Mt. Rtanj, Serbia:

Mt Rtanj, SerbiaThis is supposedly the place to be according to some cult weirdoes. A local legend has it that the mountain once swallowed an evil sorcerer who was supposed to be released on doomsday in a ball of fire. This makes it one of the ideal locations for cult weirdos to survive a nuclear winter.

5. Svalbard, Norway:

Svalbard, NorwayIf there were to be a Nuclear War, you may want to hang out near Svalbard Global Seed Vault in the Arctic Svalbard archipelago. The plant life was designed to be protected from a global catastrophe. You may, however, want to start with plants that are native to Svalbard.

Top 10 Weird Themed Places and Events

1 2

Being a man with a love for weird and wacky things I have come across some things which completely cross the line for being weird and wacky. The worst part is, some of these aren’t even trying to be weird and wacky!

Here are my top 10 places and events that are just a bit weird for me:

1. Bon Bon land

This place is just bizarre, I don’t think there is any other word, apart from disgusting, that you can use to describe it. It is a whole theme part based on excrement. Yep, you read right, all the rides, prizes and everything are based on anything that leaves the human body, poo, wee and even vomit. If you were just strolling through then you would probably think nothing of it, but if you look closely at some of the ride names like, dog fart coaster and see some of the gestures the characters are making, it is really quite disturbing.

2. Can sleep, Lake Skanderborg, Denmark

This is my kind of hotel! Actual little hut things that look like a can of beer. If they were full of beer, I’d be straight on a plane to get some. Basically it is a 121 room hotel made up of gigantic beer cans. If I could imagine heaven, this is what it would look like. Its only open in august for a local music festival, but they stock up a minibar full of royal unibrew beer for you. And the lid even opens!

3. Cannibalistic sushi

This is possibly the weirdest restaurant in the world. They offer a dish that is served on a whole table. It’s in the form of a full scale, human body. So basically you are eating something that resembles a human, you cannibals! Apparently the food is extremely high quality and really tasty, but I don’t think I could stomach it, eating a human. The worst part is the resembling man or woman is naked that they serve you!

4. Midget throwing contest

I still can’t get my head around that this is an actual sport and hasn’t yet been banned. People queue up for miles in a little bar in Windsor Ontario to have a go at throwing a midget as far as they can, it’s kind of crazy. Imagine being that midget!

5. Ice hotel, Copenhagen

This place is just awesome, it’s one of the places that I really want to go to, but then I think what it must feel like. Imagine getting up in the morning being basically stuck to an ice block which is your bed, having to wear 403494 layers just to survive the night and everything just being cold! You would be bursting for a cup of tea. It does look awesome though, all the blue lights they put inside the ice, giving it an aurora as you walk down, too cold for me though.

Top 10 Most Guarded Places On Earth

1 2

According to Maslow’s pyramid, the need of security is crucial to our survival. In the absence of security, people will live in constant stress that affects both their physical and mental health. However, safety nowadays is a relative term, considering that some people never manage to feel safe regardless of how many precautions they take.

At the opposite end, you have those of us who are overcautious and who will do anything in their power to ensure their personal safety. In the latter category, we can include military bases, intelligence centers and other facilities that are essential for mankind’s survival. Following is a top 10 list of the most guarded places on Earth.

1. Doomsday Seed Vault

As world leaders and scientists have come to realize that science fiction scenarios can very well become apocalyptic realities, the idea of building a vault to help humankind get back on its feet following a catastrophe was born. Located on a secluded island in the North Sea, the Doomsday Seed Vault is home to over 250 million crop seeds and one of the most guarded places on the planet. The vault is not only impossible to reach by man, but is also protected against a disaster involving the melting of the icecaps.

2. Fort Knox

The US Bullion Depository – most commonly known as Fort Knox due to the nearby military base – is one of the most famous highly secured areas on earth. Currently, it is estimated that it stores not only thousands of tons of gold, but it is also the presumed that the Bullion Depository is home to important historical artifacts such as the Magna Carte and the US Declaration of Independence. What makes these resources unreachable is the gold vault located underneath the facility, where the access is done via a 22 ton blast proof door that requires the introduction of a secret code combination (divided between 10 people).

3. Cheyenne Mountain

Built during the cold war, the Cheyenne Mountain complex hosts the commanding center of the North American Aerospace Defense Command. Even though NORAD moved the operations to another location, it is still one of the most guarded places on Earth. In order for you to get an idea about the security levels here, it is sufficient to mention the fact that the tunnel is protected by solid granite and reinforced so that any shock waves are felt on the other side of the mountain. On a side note, the Cheyenne Mountain complex also incorporates several free standing buildings with walls able to absorb an electromagnetic pulse attack, which would otherwise “kill” the computer system.

4. Area 51

Even if you are not a fan of UFO and alien conspiracy theories, it is very likely that you heard of Area 51. Perhaps the mystery regarding this US Air Force base in Nevada comes from the fact that nobody can get in and even navigating to the airspace around the area is strictly forbidden. However, even though the base does not exist on maps or papers, some people managed to catch a glimpse of it from above via the Google Earth app.

5. The Secret Vaults of the Mormon Church

What is interesting about the vaults of the Mormon Church is that they are so secret that few people have actually heard of them. According to the representatives of the Mormon Church, the Vault is home to genealogic and historical records. On the other hand, rumor has it that special care is taken regarding the temperature control inside the vault and it includes motion and heat sensors able to withstand powerful earthquakes.

The 10 Amazing Places to See Before You Say Good Bye

1 2

The world is full of interesting and exotic places, waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. Truth be told, 10 places is too less. It was tough, but these get top billing from me.
1. Panama
The Panama Canal cuts through land and joins the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans; the Bridge of the Americas, connecting North and South America and is a tribute to human effort, triumphing over nature. Thousands of men dug through solid land to connect the two oceans, with a huge lake in the middle; that is some job! To go thru the Canal you need to be on a ship or yacht; if you can manage to find one sailing through the canal, jump at the chance. The experience is out of the world.
2. Iguazu Waterfalls
Travel a little south from Panama right into South America, and at the border of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, you will find the most picturesque water fall in the world. On the Argentinean side, you can walk right around it, but the best views are on the Brazilian side.
3. Socotra, Yemen
This one is strictly for nature lovers! This place is got the most exotic plant life you could ever dream to see. The dragon’s blood tree is the most famous. Shaped like an umbrella, its sap is red, which gives it the name. It’s an extremely bio-diverse place. Most of the birds, insects and animals are endemic species.
4. Kyoto, Japan
Famed for its exotic and perfectly manicured gardens and its beautiful tiered Buddhist temples, this Japanese city on the island of Honshu will take your breath away. It’s steeped in history as it was the erstwhile capital of the Royal rulers of Japan. It’s also very urbanized and efficiently managed.
5. India
There’s a lot you can see and do here: modern cities like Mumbai and Bangalore, historic cities like Delhi and Jaipur, dotted with exuberant architecture, deserts, snow capped mountains in the North, sunny beaches in the South, dense forests. You name it, it’s there! Take a yoga course, delve into the spicy delights of the local cuisine and drop in uninvited to a local wedding. That’s how you will truly enjoy this country.

Top 10 Weirdest Places on Earth

1 2

There are a number of places that should be visited. These are exquisite, hardly found in other parts of the world. They are also weird as many historians and geologists still do not understand the origins. If you ever have the chance, go visit these places and experience the diversity of the earth we are living on.

1. Salar de Uyuni:

This Bolivian desert is quite different than the other deserts we have been to. The area is defined by its impressive salt structures, active volcanoes and tall cacti islands and geyser flats. The area is 10, 582 square km. The salted crust serves as a source of salt and is rich in lithium. 50% to 70% of the world’s lithium reserves are here.

2. Guanajuato Mummy Museum:

This museum features mummified bodies interred during a cholera outbreak in Guanajuato, Mexico in 1833. The mummies were exhumed in a cemetery between 1865 and 1958 when a law required relatives to pay for burial.

These mummies are unique in many ways. Unlike in Egypt, these mummies were not mummified intentionally. Dry conditions and overcrowded cemeteries caused the mummification. They also inspired legends surrounding a woman who was believed to be buried alive. Legend says she was buried faced down with arms over her facce. No truth has ever been uncovered.

3. Nine Hells of Beppu

Beppu is a city in Japan with 2,800 springs that gush out hot thermal water every day. The city has thus been named the hot-springs capital of Japan. Given their extreme temperatures and unique colors, nine of these springs have been labeled as the hells of Beppu.

The writers in the Edo Period described this as an apocalyptic place where torture through boiling took place. Now it has become an attraction for tourists.

4. McMurdo Dry Valleys:

This is one of few areas in the Antarctica that is not covered by snow or sheets of ice. Summer temperatures are so warm that  glacial ice melt, creating streams that feed freshwater lakes that lie at the bottom of the valleys. Unlike Antarctica as a whole, the lakes never freeze and have colonies of bacteria and phytoplankton.

5. Rio Tinto:

The Spanish city is heavily acidic and rich in heavy metals. The deep red color of the water is attributed to the mining population for over 5000 years. The presence of iron-oxidating bacteria and sulfur-oxidating material are thought to be the culprits. This place is still significant as it is the birthplace of the Copper Age and the Bronze Age. The first mines were developed in 3000 B.C. by Iberians and Tartessans.

Top 10 Worst Places To Breakup

1 2

Breakups are never easy. People should choose the right moments. These occurrences should not be public and should be done in private between the two parties. Here is a list of 10 places you should not break up with someone.

1. Restaurants:

Do yourself a favour and do not do this in a restaurant. You may end up causing a scene which may get you kicked out. Be tactful and do not choose a public place where you go usually.

2. Park:

This is definitely not a good idea. First of all, parks have kids walking around. What example are you purporting when you are arguing over an imminent break-up? Just like in a restaurant, you may be asked to leave.

3. Birthday Party:

Do not be David Silver on 90210, who broke up with his high school sweetheart on her birthday and at her birthday party. He was not very smooth about it either. Heartless people do this. Do not follow suit.

4. Vacation/Holiday:

This is the worst place to break-up. You are stuck together on the trip. You cannot just change flights just because you do not want to see the person. You may want to even try to use the time to talk.

My friend was getting married after being in a long distance relationship. As soon as things got sour, she booked an earlier flight out and was back home in no time. It cost her $150 to change flights.

5. Kitchen:

This is not a good idea to initiate a conversation about breakups. It has a number of sharp objects that should be avoided when getting someone upset.

Top 10 Awkward Places to Lose Wedding Rings

1 2

Recent stories of miraculous findings inspired me to write this article. People have lost rings that are over $1000 and are of great sentiments. They would move heaven and earth to find the lost ring as if it was a Lord of the Rings movie.

1. Dog’s Stomach:

A recent news article emerged on the internet regarding a couple finding a $4500 ring in their dog’s stomach. The ring was discovered by a vet, lodged deep inside the dog’s stomach. The couple searched for the ring everywhere but never suspected their dog.

2. Bushes:

Luke Stephen lost his ring in the bushes while doing gardening. He could not find the ring for 15 years and moved cities during the disappearance. The new owner, 15 years later, found the ring while adjusting Christmas lights. The day she found it was 1 day before Stephen’s 42nd anniversary.

3. Egypt:

Helen Halik was packing shopping bags for her customers at Gerrand’s Cross when she lost her ring. The ring was not found anywhere in the supermarket; it was found in Egypt. A phone rang for her at work which traced back to a man in Egypt. Halik was packing bags for someone going to Egypt. The ring was stuck to a pudding, the woman was transporting to Egypt.

4. Stripper’s underwear:

This can happen, especially if you are Marcy Rhodes D’Arcy. Marcy went to a male strip club on Married with Children and lost her wedding band ring down the man’s underwear. She frantically went looking for it and had the stripper come to her neighbour’s house to drop it off.

5. City worker’s house:

This is really fate. Kelly and Sue Murrow were newlyweds when Kelly lost his ring in 1991. 20 years later a city worker finds Kelly and tells him about the lost ring. The city worker brought the ring home to clean and forgot about it until 20 years later. WOW!

If you ever lose this your keys, do not make the same mistake twice. Do yourself a favour and buy a key chain that goes around your neck. Surveying 50, here are the top 10 places you lose your keys.

1. In the Ignition:

Forgetting or losing keys inside a car is quite popular. Professional locksmiths would not be in business otherwise. They are made and trained to help those in dire need.

2. Another person’s home:

Some people arrive at another person’s house in one piece with all their belonging. They put their keys and other belongings somewhere where they think they will remember. When they get drunk or tired, they can hardly find their head, more or less their keys to their car, house (you name it).

3. Sewage:

A person can be standing outside holding their keys on a key chain. They could also be playing with the key chain as they are talking. All of the sudden the key chain could break causing the keys to fall down the sewage drain. That once happened to me and within seconds the keys quickly slid into the sewage hole. Thank goodness it was the key to my house and not my car.

Top 10 Crazy Places People Hide Money

1 2

It is always funny to note where people stash their money. I still wonder why anyone would keep big bills in their home. It is dangerous and smells trouble when a burglar comes in. Interestingly enough, for this article, people do stash and hide money in their homes. They find some weird places to hide the bills. Here are just 10 crazy places people hide money.

1. Under the Mattress:

It is a very common practice for people to hide money under their mattress. They usually do so to wear off intruders and spouses/kids who keep asking for more money. One should not feel safe knowing that their money is under a mattress. They should be more subtle and discrete.

2. Bra:

Laugh all you want but it is true. Many waitresses and women hide money in the bras. They usually do so to attract more tips and for flirting purposes. I shall also add that, in Hollywood, women have put money in their bras so that men cannot steal it. I, however, believe this is a good place only if you are a tourist. Those who pick pocket would never think to look in there.

3. Floor:

I’ve found people to be even more creative. They would specifically have a loose piece of wood in the floor where money could be stored. Anyone walking would hardly notice it unless you tell them where the hiding spot is.

4. Freezer:

This is funny but still true. People are known to put money in the freezer wrapped in a zip lock bag or aluminum foil. You could also stuff the zip lock bag between meats and other frozen items which will cover the treasure. Most robbers would never check the freezer for money purposes.

5. Book:

People would stuff their money in a book pocket which is located in a library of thousands if not hundreds of books. Any robber will have to go rummaging through the hundreds of books to find which one has the money.
